Clinical Pilates is a specialised form of exercise that focuses on core strength, movement control, balance, posture, and flexibility. Clinical Pilates traditionally focuses on the "core stability muscles" such as the transverse abdominis and pelvic floor muscles which helps to support the spine and pelvis. Clinical Pilates has traditionally been used by physiotherapists as a treatment option to reduce pain; in particular neck and back pain through strengthening the core muscles, improving posture and developing more optimal movement patterns. However more recently people are discovering the benefits of Clinical Pilates can be used for a wide range of reasons including rehabilitations from injury or surgery, to improve functional movement to optimise performance in other exercise and activities, and as a general exercise program for health and well-being.
The benefits of Clinical Pilates includes:
- increased core strength
- better posture
- more body awareness
- better movement control
- increased flexibility
- reduces stress
- improves physical performance
- injury prevention
- decreased pain
